Description
The Indian Ocean and India have prodigious relationship. After all, this great Ocean is named after India (Oceanus Orientalis Indicus). Long before seafaring developed in the limited Aegean waters, oceanic navigation had become common with the coastal people of peninsular India. And ages before Columbus sailed across the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean had become an active thoroughfare of commercial and cultural traffic connecting India to many countries of the present-day Indian Ocean Region(IOR).
Due to peculiar location, potential of economic growth, trade capacity by sea and blue water navy, India has been undoubtedly considered as the lynchpin in the region. India’s role as the key player in the Indian Ocean region for stability, security, peace and mutual growth is crucial. Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) vision is literal unambiguous expression of India`s ideas for the IOR which was introduced by the Indian Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi in 2015. To achieve core aim of SAGAR i.e. Secured Growth, capable defence forces of India shall play an important role.
This book brings out how the Indian Air Force (IAF) has fulfilled the need of guarding India`s land and maritime borders, deterring non-state actors as well as helping its maritime neighbours in times of crisis including man-made and natural disasters. The book highlights the immense potential of the IAF wherein, with its inherent air power characteristics of speed, flexibility and swift response as well as experience; it can be a critical and inexhaustible tool in enhancing the strategic footprint of India in the IOR. For the foreseeable future, airpower is and will remain the key to security on the high seas.
